SC issues notices to 23 states, 3 UTs on Tata Motors' plea

While the Appellate Authority, which has been constituted to resolve conflicting findings relating to supply of similar goods attracting local sales tax or CST, had held that such sales constituted sales in the course of inter-state trade. It had asked Tata Motors to pay CST without any further directions for refund or adjustment of the local taxes paid to Andhra Pradesh on such sales. However, the Authority had partly allowed the company"s plea to remand the matter back to the Commercial Taxes Tribunal, Jharkhand, for examining the transactions made to other states. According to the assessee, it was fit case for grant of stay of recovery of CST in order to avoid double taxation as local sales tax had already been paid in respect of all supplies to various states, which was almost equal to the CST demanded.

OMCs turn to CPs, debentures as credit needs rise
Oil marketing companies (OMCs) are increasingly going in for debentures and commercial papers for meeting their short-term credit requirements. The largest petroleum marketer, Indian Oil Corporation, has raised around Rs 5,000 crore and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation has raised Rs 2,000 crore through sale of commercial papers (CPs) over the past two months. Bharat Petroleum Corporation recently raised Rs 1,000 crore through debentures.

Sensex slips 75pts amid lacklustre trade
The Indian bourses opened in the positive at 17,604 but soon slipped into the red owing to lack of buying activity and no major trigger to boost the sentiment. The index exhibited lacklustre movement for major part of the trading day. The benchmark index towards the end slipped deeper into the red to touch a low of 17,509, down 149 points from the day"s high.
